Grandmaster Martin de Redin (d. 1660) was the successor of Grandmaster Lascaris and the 58th Grandmaster. Although he was Grandmaster for just 3 years,he contributed much to the islands. He built 13 watch towers around the islands to look out for invaders. He also formed a corps of 4,000 men, and armed the towers with Maltese gunners paid by himself. The Grandmaster had friendly connections with Sicily, so he succeeded in obtaining resources for the Maltese and hence improve the miserable state of the people at the moment.
The image on the left is the emblem of the Granmaster, found on the balcony of the Grandmasters' Palace in Valletta. |
